Coláiste Oiriall has been ranked number two school in Ulster by The Sunday Times for student progression to universities based on data from 30 third level institutions over the last three academic years. Coláiste Ailigh, a Gaelcholáiste in Letterkenny was named top school in Ulster.

Coláiste Oiirall has been placed at number one in Ulster on four occasions and second in Ulster on two further occasions over the past six years. This year Coláiste Oiriall had been ranked eleventh in the top 20 mixed schools nationally and overall they were placed in 45th position out of the top 400 schools featured.

The Sunday Times Best Schools Guide 2016 ranks the top 400 secondary schools in Ireland by the average proportion of pupils gaining places in autumn 2013, 2014 and 2015 at one of the nine universities on the island of Ireland, main teacher training colleges, Royal College of Surgeons or National College of Art and Design.

As usual Gaelcholáisíe feature prominently in the research with Coláiste Iosagain, Dublin, Cnoc na Labhras, Limerick, Coláiste Íde, Dingle, Coláiste na Coirbe, Galway, Coláiste Eoin, Dublin, Coláiste Cois Life, Dublin, Gaelcholáiste Luimní, Limerick as well as Coláiste Oiriall and Coláláiste Ailigh all appearing within the top 50 rankings.
