Colaiste Oiriall girls defeated Loreto College, Dalkey 57-51 last Friday in a closely fought contest to see them book a place for themselves in the All-Ireland semi-final in early January. Colaiste Oiriall entered this game very much the underdogs have suffered defeat to the same school last year in the league campaign.

1 Morgan 1 Aisling

The Oiriall girls were determined to make amends for last year’s defeat and raced into an early lead.

This is due to the intense but controlled defence played by Hannah Ni Sceachain and Niamh Ni Chiarnáin. They managed to keep key Dalkey players scoreless. The score was 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. Colaiste Oiriall managed to hold on to the lead all the way to half time. The introduction of Caoimhe Nic an Bhaird and Aisling Ni Ghallchóir increased the intensity on defence once again and Lynda Ni Ghiolla Mhicil was a mastermind at breaking the Dalkey full court press.

Karen Nic Mhánais added to the team’s height advantage and on her introduction to the game and this helped controlled the rebound boards. Despite all the intensity Colaiste Oiriall found themselves trailing by 4 points entering into the final quarter despite Morgan Nic Cionna scoring a three pointer on the buzzer.  Alison Ni Ghiolla Bhride and Morgan Nic Cionna added some inside outside combination play and Colaiste Oiriall withstood the pressure to win with a 6 point margin. This win comes on the back of Cup wins against St Joseph’s Cluny and Muckross Park College.

Bhí iomaíocht ghéar sa chluiche in eadán Choláiste Loreto ach bhí Coláiste Oiriall chun tosaigh don chuid is mó den chluiche.  Ní raibh mórán ag súil le baint mar chaill muid don fhoireann chéanna le linn na léige anuraidh. Tá cailíní Oiriall ag súil le himirt i gcluiche leathcheannais na hÉireann i ndiaidh na Nollag in eadán Choláiste Loreto, Croimghlinn.
