Coláiste Oiriall defeated St. Paul’s College, Oughterard, Co. Galway by 49 points to 48 points after double extra time in Oughterard on Monday in the under 16 Basketball Ireland All-Ireland Cup quarter final.

Universities, Institutes of Technology, many further education colleges and teacher training colleges will all be in attendance at the local ETB Careers’ Exhibition which will take place in Coláiste Oiriall and in the Garage Theatre on the Education Campus, Monaghan town next Wednesday, 18th November.

Forty five athletes from Coláiste Oiriall took part in the Monaghan Athletics Association Cross Country in Killmore, Scotstown last Wednesday. The girls’ 4th/5th year team won first place while the boys’ 1st/2nd year team and the girls’ 1st/2nd year team both came third.

In the Basketball Ireland All-Ireland Cup competition Coláiste Oiriall under 19 team defeated Castleknock College by 56 points to 39. Scóráil Jack Ó Daighre 22 phointe, Dylan Mac Cionna 12 phointe agus Cian Mac Giolla Chomhail 10 bpointe.

Coláiste Oiriall TY students visited Newgrange in the heart of the Boyne Valley in Co. Meath earlier today. They were accompanied by TY Co-ordinator, Múinteoir Olivia Nic Canainn agus Múinteoir Aife Ní Chonaráin. The Newgrange tour forms a centre plank of the overall TY package in Coláiste Oiriall annually. Newgrange is also older than Stonehenge. It is in fact just one monument within the Neolithic Brú na Bóinne complex, alongside the similar passage tomb mounds of Knowth and Dowth.

Coláiste Oiriall under 19 Ladies Gaelic football team defeated St. Paul’s, Bessbrook, Co. Armagh at home on Friday.

Team Clann Lir with Cónal Ó Dufaigh, Rossa Nic Giolla Sheanáin, Seán Mac Cionna agus Tara Nic Giolla Sheanáin are the 2015 champions of the Coláiste Oiriall Spelling Bee with a final team score of 128 points. The final was held in the Garage Theatre last Thursday.

Coláiste Oiriall is organising a STEM Week this week to promote the Sciences and Mathematics. Talks, quizzes and orienteering are just some of the activities on offer during the week. Christina Kelly delivered a talk about climate change and environmental protection policies to senior students on Monday.

Coláiste Oiriall under 16 Boys’ football team is having a successful season in the Co. Monaghan Post Primary Schools’ Football Competition. They have already chalked up wins over Inver College, Beech Hill College and Largy College, drew with Castleblayney College and were defeated by Ballybay CC.

The Colaiste Oiriall girls under 16 and 19 and the boys under 16 and 19 basketball teams have all reached the BI North East League finals in Kingscourt next Wednesday. The under 19 girls’ team had already progressed to the regional final where they will play Eureka, Kells in theGirls B final.

Coláiste Oiriall Transition Year students from the ‘Ceardchártaí’ mini-company are busy selling Irish language Christmas cards that they have designed, printed and distributed themselves. The cards are a cross-curricular initiative between the Business and Art Departments under the guidance of Múinteoir Seán Mac Thaidhg and Múinteor Faela Mhic Dhomhnaill.

In Feeders Schools’ supplements published by the Irish Times and Irish Independent last Thursday Coláiste Oiriall again features strongly in school rankings with the highest number of students going on to third-level education.
