Luke Mac Giolla Comhaill and Danny Ó Treasaigh, 1st and 3rd Year students respectively in Coláiste Oiriall appeared on national primetime television last Friday night. They spoke poems on RTE 1’s premier arts show, ‘The Works’, presented by John Kelly.

Luke spoke the poem ‘A Christmas Childhood ’ by Patrick Kavanagh and it was recorded in the rural setting of his farming homestead in Corcaghan, reflecting the theme of the poem. Danny spoke the Irish language poem ‘‘Filleadh ar an gCathair’ (Citybound) le Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh and it was recorded on the balcony of the Clarnence Hotel overlooking Dublin city at dusk, again reflecting the theme of the poem.

The poems are two out of ten poems selected by the public and adjudicators as the nation’s favourites over the past one hundred years. The public now have four weeks to select ‘A Poem for Ireland’ Luke - dánand the public’s favourite poem will be announced on ‘The Works’ at the beginning of March. Luke’s and Danny’s speaking the poems served as a backdrop to the literary commentary provided by academics in support of the poems.

Bhí an clár mar chuid de shraith cláracha ‘A Poem for Ireland’ ina bhfuil muintir na hÉireann ag vótáil don dán Éireannach is fearr leo le céad bliain anuas.

Two of the poems will be featured each week on the show and also on the John Murray radio show and the programme is available on the RTE player. Three of the ten students came from Monaghan (Coláiste Oiriall and St. Louis) and the remainder came from Dublin, Cork, Clare and Letterkenny. Luke came second in the junior section of the national Poetry Aloud in December while Danny clinched the runner-up spot also two years earlier.
