The results of this year’s Peann agus Pár Literary Competition held in Coláiste Oiriall before Christmas were announced during Tionól Scoile (School Assembly) on Thursday. The adjudicator complimented the entrants in all sections, saying that the standard was very high. Four sections of the competition were dedicated to English medium entries and a further four sections were devoted to Irish medium entries.

The Coláiste Oiriall annual Law Workshop for Transition Year students was held on Friday and delivered by James Fahey, barrister on the Galway circuit. Aoibhín Ní Fhionnagáin, a third year student in Coláiste Oiriall, received the award for BT Best Overall Project in Irish at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS last Friday evening with her project entitled “Lámhscríbhneoireacht dochtúirí i gcomparáid le scríobh daoine eile”. Aoibhín’s project was also received Highly Commended in the Social and Behavioural Intermediate Individual category.

Coláiste Oiriall 1st Year Girls’ basketball team defeated St. Louis Secondary School, Carrickmacross by 26-15 at home on Friday. Lara Ó Máirtín and Eadaoin Ní Chearáin were Oiriall’s best players while Amy Ní Dhaighre and Amy Ní Dhufaigh were.

The two Green School Committees in Coláiste Oiriall have been very busy in the last number of weeks preparing their recycling campaign in anticipation of receipt of a Green Flag.

 

Coláiste Oiriall under 19 Girls’ basketball team travel to Tralee next Friday where they will take part in an all-Ireland quarter final play-off. They will play Mercy Secondary School, Mounthawk, Tralee and Glanmire Community College, the former which has 1,300 students.

Dysania and Co Crú swept the boards in the senior groups’ contemporary music section in the national finals of the Gael-Linn Scléip talent competition which was held in the Clasach Theatre, Dublin on Saturday.

Coláiste Oiriall Parents’ Association hand over the keys of the 34 seater Merecedes bus which the school has just purchased. Ó chlé: Susan McKenna (PA treasurer), Brendan Ó Dufaigh, Príomhoide, Jennie McCleary (secretary), Mary Buckley (chairperson 2013-14) and Claire Burns (chairperson).

Luke Mac Giolla Comhaill and Danny Ó Treasaigh, 1st and 3rd Year students respectively in Coláiste Oiriall appeared on national primetime television last Friday night. They spoke poems on RTE 1’s premier arts show, ‘The Works’, presented by John Kelly.

Sorcha Ní Neill, Coláiste Oiriall, proudly wears her bronze medal after coming third in the Junior Girls District D School Cross Country in Mallusk recently. Sorcha will now run in the Ulster championships again in Mallusk on Tuesday, 24 February. Tá Coláiste Oiriall brodúil go bhfuil ceathrar dalta dár gcuid roghnaithe ar fhoireann peil ban Mhuineacháin faoi 14. Imríonn Caoimhe, Aisling, Eadaoin agus Aimee le ceithre fhochumann difriúil agus tá beirt acu sa chéad bhliain agus beirt acu sa dara bliain.

Coláiste Oiriall 1st and 2nd Year basketball teams, under the tutelage of Múinteoir Deirdre have enjoyed ongoing success in this year’s Basketball Ireland North East League. They appear to be heading for the regional semi-finals after victories over Largy College, Clones, Collegiate School, Monaghan, St. Clare’s, Ballyjamesduff and Bush Post Primary School, Dundalk. There is one remaining game for the second year team against Dundalk Grammar School.
