Congratulations to Lucy Nic Shiacais, a second year student in Coláiste Oiriall, who won out the Newry regional heat of the Gael-Linn public speaking competition, Abair last Thursday. The other three contestants were Katie Ní Chléire, who was placed second, Chloe Ní Ghiolla Mhichil and Caoimhín Ó Ceallaigh. The team mentor was Múinteoir Olivia.

Bhí Lucy Nic Shiacais sa chéad áit sa bhabhta reigiúnda the Gael-Linn sponsored public speaking competition, Abair, ag caint ar chomórtais dóighiúlachta agus bhí Katie Ní Chléire sa dara áit ag caint faoi Lá Arthur agus tionchar an óil. Bhí caint Chaoimhín Uí Cheallaigh bunaithe ar an chlár teilifíse “Ná hinis don Bhrídeog” agus labhair Chloe Ní Ghiolla Mhichil faoi shaol déagóirí.

The aim of the competition, which included speakers from St Colman’s Grammar School and Abbey CBS Grammar School, is to afford public speaking experience in Irish to students. Competitors are permitted to speak on any interesting, topical subject. Competitors are permitted to speak on any interesting, topical subject. Those students who succeed in the qualifying rounds must choose a new subject for the final. The Coláiste Oiriall competitors were awarded a Gael Linn certificate of commendation while Lucy and Katie were presented with a Gael Linn trophy. Marks were awarded for content, delivery and fluency.
