Coláiste Oiriall’s first and second year team travelled to Scoil Uí Mhuirí in Dunleer on Tuesday last to play the only other undefeated team in the league to date. It promised to be a close encounter with both teams battling hard to finish top of the pool. At the end of the first quarter only a single basket separated the teams.

In the second quarter the five players Cian O Conraoi, Dylan Mac Cionna, Calvin Carlisle, Ryan O Conghaile and Tiarnán Mac Uaid rebounded the ball well, maximised on the fast break opportunities and forced Scoil Uí Mhuirí to turn over the ball. They kept Scoil Uí Mhuirí scoreless and clocked up ten points themselves. Coláiste Oiriall was the superior team in the second half and deserved their 26-8 victory.

Baineadh geit as an dara bliain le luas na himeartha nuair a thug siad aghaidh ar an gcúirt.  Go tapaidh bhí siad 10 bpointe ar chúl.  Bhain drochghortú d’imreoir ó Scoil Uí Mhuirí agus leis an mbriseadh san imirt, thug sé deis do Choláiste Oiriall iad féin a eagrú athuair. Bhí taispéantas den chéad scoth ó Francis O hAodha a ghnóthaigh 10 bpointe chun cuidiú lena fhoireann an cluiche a thabhairt leo ar scór 26-16.

On Thursday last Coláiste Oiriall boys faced Coláiste na hInse. The first year team took to the court for the first game with Jack O Daighre receiving the ball cleanly from Francis O hAodha’s tip and finishing with a fine lay up only seconds into the game. Calvin Carlisle stole the ball from the inbounds and added a basket of his own. Ryan O Conghaile won a great rebound and set Francis up for another easy lay up. Oisín O Muirí’s introduction resulted in him setting Jack O Daighre up for a fast break which he converted. The first quarter ended with Coláiste Oiriall leading10-6. Dylan Mac Cionna was in fine shooting form in the second quarter when he scored two big outside shots. Defensively Tiarnan Mac Uaid, Ruairí Mac Cionna and Jamie O Murchú were superb keeping the Coláiste na hInse team scoreless for the entire quarter.  Coláiste Oiriall continued to dominate the game both offensively and defensively and they ran out easy winners in the end on a score line that read 30-11.

Thug foireann na dara bliana aghaidh ar an gcúirt agus thosaigh siad go láidir le Francis O hAodha ag gnóthú 8 bpointe gan freagra ar bith. Shuigh Coláiste Oiriall siar rúinín beag agus d’éirigh le Coláiste na hInse 3 phointe a fháil roimh don réiteoir an fhéadóg a shéideadh chun an cheathrú a dhúnadh. Despite the promising start the Coláiste Oiriall team found it difficult to break the Coláiste na hInse defence in the second quarter.  Coláiste Oiriall was wasteful with possession and careless when shooting and failed to add any score to the board in this quarter. D’fheabhsaigh an imirt sa triú cheathrú agus d’aimsigh Cian O Conraoi scór gleoite ó phas den scoth a fuair sé ó Philib O Conaill. Chuir Philib leis an pas le scór é féin go gairid ina dhiaidh sin agus chríochnaigh Jamie O Suiligh, Josh Mac Philib agus Maitiú Mac Uaid an cluiche le ciseán an duine acu.  Chríochnaigh an cluiche 22 – 7.

The first years came up against Ardee Community College in the final pool game.  Ardee were physically a bigger side and Coláiste Oiriall found it difficult to deal with this initially. Good team work between Jack O Daighre and Francis O hAodha saw them score 8 points in the opening quarter. Dylan Mac Cionna once again added 9 points to the board and Darragh O Tuathail scored a lovely shot from the free throw line. Coláiste Oiriall boys won the game 28 – 7 to put them top of their group and awaiting a place in the semi final.

Coláiste Oiriall first year girls lose out to St Louis Secondary School in a nail biting encounter.  The sides were level at the end of the first quarter in a low scoring affair with 2 points a piece.  Coláiste Oiriall dominated the second quarter and Karla Ni Dhocartaigh scored 6 points.  At half time Coláiste Oiriall led the game 9 – 4.  The third quarter saw St Louis Convent dominate the game, control the rebounds and their finishing at the basket was clinical.  They led by a single basket at the opening of the final quarter. The final quarter saw the teams swap baskets repeatedly and at full time both sides were level.  It took four periods of extra time to separate the two teams.  Both teams battled hard and both were in foul trouble.  Over the course of the game Coláiste Oiriall were rewarded with 18 free throws and only managed to convert 5 of them.  In a tense finish it was St Louis Secondary School that came away winners by a single point.

D’oscail an cluiche dara bliana le Ellen Ni Bhriain ag aimsiú sé phointe as a chéile.  Bhí Laura McPhilips an láidir don chlochar agus bhí an clochar ciseán chun tosaigh ag an mbriseadh. Bhí Hollie Mc Kenna agus Emillie O Donoghue i gcumhacht sa dara leath ach cuireadh Emillie den chúirt nuair a rinne sí feall ar Frances Nic Chonghaile Nic Aodha. Chuir Anna Nic Cearrain 8 bpointe ar chlár na scóranna ach bhí an dúshlán a bhí roimh na cailíní ró mhór agus chaill siad an cluiche 33 – 24.  Beidh na cailíní seo réidh do chluiche crua mar cluiche leath ceannais i gceann coicíse.
