They were Ciara Ní Mhathúna, Aindriú Mac Siacais, Seimhín Ní Dhonnghaile and Rachel Ní Shuilleabháin. Ciara spoke about the influence celebrities and superstars on our everyday life while Rachel spoke about women’s rights. Sometimes serious, sometimes jovial, the four students were always entertaining. The speakers’ humorous style and clear delivery impressed the adjudicators. Their mentor was Múinteoir Olivia Nic Canainn.

Loinnir Ní Dhonnghaile won first place speaking about life in bygone times and Aindriú Mac Siacais was second speaking about the Irish language in the senior section that had 18 competitors in total. They now go through to the Ulster Final. Other participating schools were St Claire’s College, Ballyjamesduff, Beech Hill College, Monaghan, St Patrick’s Acadamy, Dungannon, St Michael’s College, Enniskillen and Mount Lourdes, Enniskillen. Déanann muid comhghairdeas le Loinnir agus le hAindriú agus leis an bheirt iomaitheoir eile ón scoil agus tá muid ag súil leis go mbeidh an lá leo i gCraobh Uladh.

Congratulations to the Coláiste Oiriall under 16 Girls’ Basketball team who won the Basketball Ireland North East Regional Final which was played in the Phoenix Centre, Carrickmacross today with the narrowest of margins. The final score was Coláiste Oiriall 40 points and Beech Hill College 39 points. Coláiste Oiriall was 29-16 ahead going in to the third quarter but their concentration lapsed and Beech Hill’s Casey Treanor excelled.

Top scorers were Ellen Ní Bhrian with 18 points, Amy Ní hAmaill with 7 points and Tara Ní Raghallaigh with 7 points. Lianne Nic an Bhaird and Anna Ní Chrarráin played outstandingly well. Anna clinched the game from the free throw line as Beech Hill ran into foul trouble. Amy Ní hAmaill controlled possession of the boards and used the clock in her favour until the final whistle. Lorna Finnegan on behalf of the North East Committee presented the cup to Ellen Ní Bhriain, Coláiste Oiriall captain.

The Under 19 Boys’ team was defeated by a basket by Scoil Uí Mhuirí, Dunleer as we had found ourselves in early foul trouble with Tomas Ó Muineach and Conor Ó Maolfhabhaoil picking up three personal fouls in the opening quarter. Daith’I Mac Giolla Bhríde was top scorer for Coláiste Oiriall with 13 points and Conor Ó Maolfhaobhaoil scoring 10 points.

Guíonn Coláiste Oiriall gach ádh ar an dá fhoireann cispheile a bheas san iomaíocht i gCraobhacha an Oirthuaiscirt a bheas ar siúl sa Phoenix Centre i gCarraig Mhachaire Rois ar an Luan. Beidh an fhoireann buachaillí faoi 19 ag imirt in eadán Scoil U’I Mhuirí, Lann Léire agus beidh an fhoireann cailíní faoi 16 ag imirt in eadán Choláiste Ard Feá.

Coláiste Oiriall’s Under 19 Boys basketball team have booked their place in the finals of the Northeast League on Monday next in the Phoenix Centre in Carrickmacross, where they will face stiff opposition from Scoil Uí Mhuirí, Dunleer. The team will be hoping to retain the title which they won last year. The boys’ season opened with a game against Scoil Uí Mhuirí away from home. Coláiste Oiriall was under strength on that occasion and showed that they lacked match practice. Scoil Uí Mhuirí ran out winners.

There was remarked improvement in performance in the games against Largy College, Clones and St Bricin’s College Bellturbert and Coláiste Oiriall was the deserved winner in both. Coláiste na hInse in Bettystown gave the school a walkover in the semi finals and this means that the Coláiste Oiriall and Dunleer play in the final. The team will need big performances from Conor O Maolfhabhaoil who is currently the top scorer and Daithi Mac Giolla Bhríde, the point guard, in order to reverse the result of earlier in the season and bring the cup back to Coláiste Oiriall.

Coláiste Oiriall Under 16 girls play in the final of the “C” Girls’ North East basketball league on Monday next in the Phoenix Centre in Carrickmacross. The girls have had a hectic schedule of games in order to reach this stage of the competition. They have played local schools, Beech Hill College, Largy College, and Monaghan Collegiate as well as away games to Cnoc Mhuire, Granard and St Aidan’s Cootehill. There has been tremendous team spirit in this group with Ellen Ni Bhriain and Amy Ni hAmaill being top scorers for the team with Lianne Nic An Bhaird and Anna Nic Crarráin being the top rebounders.

Transitions year students Tara Ni Raghallaigh, Sarah Ni Fhailigh and Aimee Ni Mhathúna all played leadership roles on the team. The semi –finals saw the Coláiste Oiriall girls defeat Scoil Uí Mhuirí, convincingly in a one sided affair and a closer game would have been better preparation for the final. The girls finished runners up at this stage last year and would love to go one further. Guímid gach rath orthu.
